The Foster Care Questions People Are Worried to Ask

Thinking about foster care often starts small. It may be because of a conversation, a news story, or a friend who fosters. And then a string of questions tends to follow. Sometimes people don't ask these questions out loud, because they worry the answers will tell them they're not up to it.

But we'd encourage you to ask every question you have. Thoroughly exploring foster care, and how caring for a child might fit into your life, is the only realistic way to understand whether it's right for you.

Below are some of the questions we hear most often. There's no such thing as a wrong or silly one.

"Aren't I too old/too young to become a foster carer?"
As long as you’re aged 21 or over, there's no single ideal age. Foster carers range from people in their 20s to people well into retirement. What matters more than your age is your stability, your patience, and your willingness to learn and ask for help. And most importantly, your care and commitment to supporting a child at a time in their life when they really need it.

"I work full-time. Does that rule me out?"
Not at all. Plenty of carers work full-time, part-time or shift work. Different types of care suit different schedules, and this is exactly the kind of thing a conversation with Fostering Connections or a foster care agency can help you work through. You don't need to have it all figured out before you contact us.

"I don't own my home/I live in an apartment."
You don't need to own your home or have a big house. You need to be able to provide a safe space and have a room for a child. Renters and people in apartments foster all the time.

"What if I get too attached?"
This is one of the most common worries, and it comes from a caring place. Forming a bond with a child is part of what makes great care possible. It's not something to be avoided. The goal of foster care is to help children stay connected to their birth families and, where it's safe, return to them. Carers are supported to navigate the emotional side of this, including the goodbyes. You won't be doing it alone.

"What if I start the process of becoming a foster carer, and then realise it's not the right time?"
Deciding to learn more about foster care isn't a commitment. You can ask questions, take your time, and step back at any point. Most people take months (and sometimes longer) to work out whether providing foster care is right for them, and that's exactly how it should be.

"I'm not sure I'd be good enough."
Foster carers aren't superheroes, and they're not expected to be perfect. They're everyday people who want to make a positive difference for a child in their community. What children need is someone stable, safe and willing to show up for them.

"Do I have to know what type of care I want to provide?"
No. Emergency, short-term, long-term and respite care all look different, and you don't need to choose before you enquire. Working out what might suit your life is part of the conversation, not a test you have to pass first.

“What actually happens if I submit an enquiry?”
Making an enquiry simply means starting a conversation. You can ask anything, tell us about your situation, and find out what foster care really involves. There is no obligation to go any further. It's a chance to learn about caring for a child, not a decision you're locked into.

If you've had one of these questions sitting in the back of your mind, you're in good company. The fact that you're asking it is a sign you're taking the time to think carefully about whether foster care might be right for you.
